Pre-Messinian Deposits of the Mediterranean Ridge: Biostratigraphic and Geochemical Evidence from the Olimpi Mud Volcano Field

This study presents the results derived from micropaleontological and organic geochemical analyses of mud breccia samples obtained (through gravity coring) five volcanoes (Gelendzhik, Heraklion, Moscow, Milano, Leipzig) located at Olimpi volcano field on Mediterranean Ridge accretionary complex. A thorough calcareous nannofossil semi-quantitative analysis was performed to determine biostratigraphic assignment deep-seated source strata. Mudstone/shale clasts different stratigraphic levels were identified assigned Miocene biozones CNM10, CNM8–9, CNM7, CNM6–7, Oligocene CNO4/CNO5. single mudstone clast Gelendzhik plateau, biozone demonstrated unique characteristics, suggesting a sapropelic origin. Subsequently, total carbon (TOC) content thermal maturity collected breccias evaluated using Rock-Eval pyrolysis technique, their oil gas potential estimated. The pyrolyzed sediments both rich poor (TOC >0.5% or <0.5%, respectively), with matter showing characteristics type III kerogen that consists adequate hydrogen be generative, but insufficient prone. However, late Serravallian (CNM10) found consist mixed II/III kerogen, implying an oil-prone rock.
